Address: Burgweg 1, 66849 Landstuhl
Length: 7.2 kilometers
Website: www.landstuhl.de
Phone: +49 (6373) 13 000 12

Culture, history, nature, and a wonderful view over the Landstuhl region – this is what hikers can expect on the 7.2 km (4.5 miles) long loop trail from Nanstein Castle via Bärenloch Lake in Kindsbach and back. The starting point of this tour is Nanstein Castle, the landmark of the city of Landstuhl that can be seen from afar. From here, the hike follows the scallop signs or the black Nordic walking signs. At the Herrengärtchen viewpoint, you can enjoy a wonderful view over Ramstein Air Base as far as Nordpfälzer Bergland. The path continues to the western edge of Landstuhl. After about 2.9 kilometers you leave the scallop signs as your point of orientation and take a left turn following the black Nordic walking signs that lead you to Bärenloch Lake in Kindsbach. This idyllic natural bathing lake is fed with clear, fresh spring water and invites you to swim, linger and rest. The highlight on your way back to Landstuhl is the Heidenfelsen, which can be reached via a short detour. The Heidenfelsen is a Roman-Celtic place of worship where a rock relief can be admired. Back on the main path, the hike leads again in the direction of Landstuhl to the starting point Nanstein Castle.

Karlstal Gorge Loop Trail

Start/Finish: Parking lot next to the town hall, Trippstadt village center
Address: Hauptstrasse 51, 67705 Trippstadt
Website: www.landstuhl.de
Phone: +49 (6371) 13 00012

The wild and romantic Karlstal Gorge is considered one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Palatinate Forest because of its red sandstone rocks, numerous small waterfalls, and ancient stock of trees. The Moosalb creek winds its way through the largely untouched rocky gorge. In 1780 the landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, who also designed the English Garden in Munich, was commissioned to transform and redesign the landscape garden around Trippstadt Castle and the layout of the Karlstal Gorge was part of this project. A path runs beside the creek over small wooden bridges. In the middle of the gorge, you will reach a small wooden pavilion, which is a popular photo subject. In 1983 the valley was declared a nature reserve, primarily because of its geological importance and the fact that it was equipped with rock heaps and mighty boulders. Almost all fern species found in the Palatinate Forest can be discovered here. 170 species have been identified in the rich moss flora, including 31 rare and 13 very rare ones.
